In the oil and gas industry, drilling fluids play a critical role in achieving operational objectives. Due to their distinct physical and chemical properties, these fluids significantly contribute to the progress and success of drilling operations. For example, drilling fluid can provide insights into the type of geological formation being drilled and prevent catastrophic events such as well blowouts.

Drilling fluid is a colloidal fluid composed of various phases of liquids and solid materials. It is utilized to facilitate and continue drilling operations across different formations. Over time, diverse materials with varying physical and chemical properties have been added to these fluids, resulting in three primary types: water-based fluids, oil-based fluids, and air-based drilling fluids.

In deep oil wells, where there are high hydrostatic pressures and overburden pressures, it is essential to use drilling fluids with multiple chemical properties to serve various purposes. For instance, the fluid’s weight must be sufficient to control formation pressures, it should effectively lubricate and cool the drill bit, and it must not damage the oil reservoir. Additionally, the fluid’s viscosity should be such that it can be easily pumped by mud pumps without exerting excessive pressure on them. Drilling mud is pumped into the drill pipe string, exits at high velocity from the nozzles at the drill bit, and returns to the surface through the annular space between the drill string and the wellbore. Upon reaching the surface, the fluid is poured onto screens that remove solid particles introduced during drilling. These screens are mesh-sized to filter different particle sizes. For example, clay particles are separated on a screen known as a shale shaker, and the fluid is then stored in a fluid tank. After being processed based on its composition, the fluid is recirculated into the drilling system.

The composition of the mud when it returns to the surface can provide valuable information about the well. This includes insights into the gas content, the amount of water in the drilling fluid, and the type of solids present, all of which are crucial for understanding the well’s conditions. Given the significance and sensitivity of this area, substantial efforts are continuously made to advance this industry.
