The Azadegan field is located in southwestern Iran, approximately 80 kilometers west of Ahvaz, near the city of Susangerd and adjacent to the Iran-Iraq border. The first exploratory well in this oil field was drilled in 1976, and the extensive reservoir system of the field was discovered with the drilling of the second well in 1999. To date, four productive layers have been identified in the Azadegan field: Sarvak, Khatami, Gadvan, and Fahliyan. On a surface contour map, the length of the field in the Iranian section is approximately 45 to 60 kilometers, its width is about 17 kilometers, and its area is approximately 900 square kilometers. The total in-place oil reserves are estimated to exceed 34 billion barrels, with recoverable oil estimated at around 2 billion barrels. Due to the extensive nature of the Azadegan field, its development has been divided into two sections: Azadegan North and Azadegan South.

Azadegan North Field

The Azadegan North Field is essentially the northern section of the Azadegan field, covering an area of approximately 460 square kilometers. It is situated 120 kilometers southwest of Ahvaz, within the border region between Iran and Iraq, and primarily in the Hoor al-Azim marshland. The estimated in-place oil reserves in the Sarvak, Khatami, and Gadvan reservoirs of this field are around 8.65 billion barrels, with recoverable oil estimated at 420 million barrels. Gas lift mechanisms are employed in the field’s wells to maintain and sustain production levels. Phase 1 of the Azadegan North Field development project has been executed under a buyback contract by China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPCI). Currently, from the 59 wells in the field, daily production stands at 75,000 barrels of oil. Processed oil from the field is transported via a 16-inch pipeline, 73 kilometers in length, to the West Karun Pumping Station. Additionally, the extracted gas is planned to be sent via a 12-inch pipeline, 42 kilometers long, to the NGL3200 facility.

Azadegan South Field

The South Azadegan Field is, in fact, the southern section of the Azadegan Field, covering an area of approximately 440 square kilometers. The development plan for this field aims to create production, processing, and transportation capacity for 320,000 barrels of oil per day from the Sarvak, Khatami, and Gadvan layers, as well as the Fahliyan formation, through the drilling of 185 new wells. The in-place oil reserve of this field is estimated at 2.8 billion barrels; with the recoverable oil approximately 1.6 billion barrels. The oil gravity in this field ranges from 22 to 34 API. Currently, the field produces about 85,000 barrels of crude oil per day, which is processed at the West Karun Operating Unit and then sent to the West Karun Pumping Station.

In relation to this project, the main contractor assigned part of the project to Pedex Company. Subsequently, the esteemed client invited qualified companies to participate in a tender. Giyah Chasb Drilling Services Company, with its extensive background, capabilities, and experience, secured the tender by achieving the highest score and offering the best price. Consequently, contracts were signed in two sections: the supply of chemicals and drilling fluids, and the provision of technical and engineering services. This contract was successfully completed in late 2018, ahead of the scheduled timeline, and was approved and commended by the client.
